Broadcasting

In addition to being involved with The Pine Needle and PRSSA, I was also a member of BEA.

The Broadcast Education Association (BEA) is the premiere international academic media organization, driving insights, excellence in media production, and career advancement for educators, students, and professionals.

The association’s publications, annual convention, web-based programs, and regional district activities provide opportunities for juried production competition and presentation of current scholarly research related to aspects of the electronic media. These areas include media audiences, economics, law and policy, regulation, news, management, aesthetics, social effects, history, and criticism, among others.

BEA is concerned with electronic media curricula, placing an emphasis on interactions among the purposes, developments, and practices of the industry and imparting this information to future professionals.

UNCP's chapter of BEA officially began in the fall of 2017. The club is open to anyone, not just broadcasting majors.

I personally do not have a lot of experience in the broadcasting field. Although, since joining the club, my knowledge of the field has grown.

The best broadcasting experience that I received was when I helped a friend who is a broadcasting major, film the UNCP vs. UNC game in November of 2016 for a news package.

We were given media credentials for the game. We were able to go places that not too many people get to see. We were able to see first hand what members of the media have to do in order to get ready to cover the game.

My tasks during the game was to assist my friend with the setting up of the camera. We decided to get as close to the basket as possible in order to get the best footage.

After the game we were able to go to the UNC Media Room for the post-game interviews. Before the interviews started, I positioned the camera and microphones so that we could get the best audio.

This experience is something that I will never forget!

My Big Screen Debut

For my big screen debut, I was able to help my friends' video project come to life! The video won the “Award of Distinction” in an annual competition of the Association of Marketing & Communication Professionals (AMCP).

My friends, David L. Brown III and Savannah Thompson were recognized in the student category of the 2018 Videographer Awards for their corporate video, “Housing & Residence Life Freshman Introduction.”

The six-minute video was produced in their capstone course, BRD 4600 Advanced TV Production, that was taught by Dr. Jamie Litty. Students in the class worked in a variety of forms and genres to learn production management from the initial pitch of a content idea to post-production finishing touches.

The AMCP recognizes outstanding work in advertising, public relations, corporate communications and broadcasting with the Award of Excellence, Award of Distinction, and Honorable Mention in various categories of televisual media.

Brown III worked for Housing & Residence Life throughout his time at UNCP and was active in the Residence Hall Association (RHA). He and Thompson shot, wrote, and edited the video to allow it to be broken up for viewing in shorter modules about campus living options, getting involved in residential activities, and how to apply for campus housing.

Brown III said he found a passion for the field of housing and residence life when he got involved with RHA back in his freshman year. He later interned with the department and was employed as a Residence Life Student Assistant in his senior year, assisting with marketing and promotions.

“When thinking about my final capstone project, I couldn’t think of anything better than a professionally planned and executed promotional video for Housing & Residence Life, which I knew they needed,” he said.

“This class was such a wonderful stepping stone for my career,” said Thompson.

“I learned hands-on how to do production management while also honing in on my videography skills. David and I work great together, so it made the project even more enjoyable,” she said.

A slightly shorter version of their completed video is now being used on the university’s YouTube channel  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M_GfOPDR-ac  and at Vimeo https://vimeo.com/278023605
